This work was undertaken to accomplish four
things: -
1. To
describe the dangerous consequences of high environmental temperatures on
humans for persons unfamiliar with these effects.
2. To explain the various mechanisms we
use in our attempts to maintain normal, core body temperatures in difficult
circumstances.
3. To establish methods whereby the
effect of a particular set of dangerous environmental factors on the core body
temperature of a person engaged in any activity, variously clothed and
environmentally exposed, can be evaluated.
4. Using these methods estimate the
effect of a range of probable environmental conditions which may be expected to
occur post 2070; should global warming as projected by CSIRO – 2001 –
eventuate; on four individuals, variously clothed and engaged in a range of
activities in seven Australian cities. Their responses are assessed for various
exposures, either outdoors in full shade or sun, or indoors in different
housing types.
